John Doyle, the British director who rejuvenates old musicals with a gimmick the actors double as members of the orchestra introduced himself to American audiences last season with his much-acclaimed revival of Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. For my money, this Sondheim show fits his formula even better, especially with Broadway pros like Raul Esparza (a Best Actor nominee) heading the cast.
Tony Outlook: With points for originality, it looks like the frontrunner.
